In the 1990s, Colombia was the main producer of coca and cocaine in the world. Most everybody is familiar with Pablo Escobar because of hollywood movies, more than documented facts. And most connect the country to cocaine, rather than its great coffee. But when you are in Colombia, do not make the mistake of asking for cocaine, or where to buy some. Aside from it being illegal, cocaine has brought a lot of misery and suffering for most Colombians. It is simply a taboo topic, and will offend the person you are talking to. Even as a joke, it will have repercussions. So be aware so as not to offend the locals.
