Don’t Assume Everyone Identifies As Chinese

Never assume that all Hongkongers believe their city is part of China. Even though it’s been over two decades since the territory was reverted from the British rule to Chinese sovereignty, not all locals would agree that Hong Kong is part of China. As China’s influence over Hong Kong grows stronger, many individuals in the city are experiencing cultural dissonance. So, never correct a local who identifies as Hongkonger, Chinese, or mixed identity. Correcting someone’s choice is considered rude and insensitive. Openly contradicting them about their identity will also cause them to lose face. Similarly, don’t strike up a conversation about Hong Kong, China, or the Umbrella Movement since you don’t know what every individual’s stance is, and you don’t want to put anyone in an uncomfortable or embarrassing situation. Lastly, be tactful when speaking about China because some of the locals might not appreciate discussing anything involving mainland Chinese.
