Most of the sidewalks in the cities of Norway are covered in coarse sand and gravel. During the winter, tons of gravel are sprinkled over Oslo’s pavements to help pedestrians keep their footing and prevent them from falling on the slippery surfaces. While it’s easy to maneuver your four-wheeled suitcase on the polished floors of an airport, it can be a real struggle to pull it on rough footpaths, cobblestones, grass, or even over a hill if you’re excited to see everything before leaving your things at the hotel. Unless you brought a sturdy suitcase with off-road capabilities, you might end up with a broken baggage with missing wheels—or a sprained ankle if you attempt to drag your suitcase all over the gravelly streets. It might be wiser to bring a knapsack or get yourself a carry-on suitcase that transforms into a backpack.
