Some people assume Norway is the land of eternal darkness, and they can visit any time of the year and experience the magic of the Northern Lights dancing above their heads. However, while it’s true that the sun does not rise during winter in the north, it also never sets during the summer months. Having said that, it’s challenging to see the Aurora Borealis in the middle of summer. Also, Norway is a huge country, and it would be difficult to see the Northern Lights if you stay too far south. Instead, you need to head north of the Arctic Circle, 16 to 20 hours away from Oslo or Bergen, even farther than Trondheim and at least as far north as Bodø, to get a good chance of seeing them. You’ll also want to extend your stay in the north because even though you scheduled your trip between the months of October and March, there’s no guarantee you’ll see the Northern Lights in a week or two. Sometimes, bad weather gets in the way. Aside from staying as long as possible in the north for better chances of seeing the lights, pack the right clothing, too. Be prepared to stay outside at night, particularly after 7 PM, because you don’t want to miss seeing the Northern Lights if they make a quick appearance at the moment you decided to warm up inside.
