Most establishments in Norway accept credit cards and debit cards, and some places only accept kort (card) and not kontant (cash, coins, banknotes) payments. The country is fast becoming a completely cashless society with transactions made only through cards. The citizens of Norway carry out most of their money transfers electronically in a way that has surpassed even global superpowers such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Not only are cards more environment-friendly, they’re also easier to verify for tax reasons. Online shopping and reservations, e-commerce, and other internet activities also use cards and not cash. Currently, only an estimated 10% of transactions remain conducted with physical cash. Also, elderly Norwegians who are not familiar with the digital market prefer to use cash.
