Don’t Schedule Your Trip During Fellesferie

Don’t schedule your visit in July when the bustling cities of Oslo and Bergen are empty, and most of the stores and offices are closed until early August. During the long holiday known as Fellesferie, the Norwegian workforce escape the cities to go on an extended vacation. The annual holiday lasts three to four weeks, beginning on the second week of July, and Norwegians get to spend time in the cabins, on the fjords, or out of the country. Fellesferie started in the early 20th century when the industrial sector realized it was more practical and economic to have everyone go on a simultaneous vacation than having separate holidays off at different times of the year. While this allows the locals to celebrate and enjoy the sunshine together, it can be extremely inconvenient for tourists visiting in July. If you’ve already booked your trip in July, skip exploring the cities where you might not find any open restaurant and head straight to the fjords or the Lofoten Islands to see the country’s breathtaking natural attractions.
