Don’t Worry About Leaving A Tip

While it’s customary for Norwegians to leave a tip for servers in restaurants and bars when they’re happy with the service, tipping is not compulsory in the country. The service charge is included in your bill, and if you decide to leave a 20% tip or more, they won’t see you as being generous but as showing off (i.e. the teachings of Janteloven). However, it is common courtesy to round up your bill to the nearest five or ten NOK (Norwegian krone). Unlike in other countries where workers in the service sector receive very low wages and rely on tips to pay their rent, Norwegian employees in all industries are given a living wage based on collective agreements among different sectors. Also, leaving coins on the table is uncommon in Norway since almost everything is digitized, and the locals are used to a cashless system. It’s also unusual to leave a tip in cafes and fast food restaurants or to tip taxi drivers and hotel cleaning staff.
