Don’t Assume Norwegian Stereotypes Are True

It’s always good to do some research before you visit a country so you don’t end up asking ridiculous questions, such as “Where are the polar bears?” or “Is Norway the capital of Sweden?” First off, polar bears only roam wild and free in the massive island of Svalbard and don’t just pop up in Oslo’s coffee shops. Second, even though Norway is well-known for its winters and Norwegians look warm and cozy, they do get cold. They just know how to deal with the cold by properly insulating and heating their homes and wearing appropriate and many-layered clothing. And while Norwegians love to ski, with some kids using skis and sleighs to get to school, they do not ski their way everywhere, even inside shops and restaurants. They walk, hike, ride a bike, drive, or get on a train, too. Next, while there a many tall, blond, and blue-eyed locals, there are also plenty of dark-haired and dark-eyed Norwegians. Lastly, Norwegians are not barbaric Vikings. True, they are proud of their Viking heritage, but they focus more on their ancestors’ skills in trading and exploration and not the pillaging.
