Don’t Invade A Norwegian’s Personal Space

The Norwegians may be among the happiest people in the world, but they also like their personal space. They are not being cold or rude when they back away from you when you step too close to them. They are simply not comfortable having your face a few inches from theirs during a conversation. Even when sitting on a bench in the park or while waiting for the bus, Norwegians keep a good distance between each other. Also, keep your hands to yourself, and never touch anyone you don’t know. The modern Vikings will welcome a handshake in greeting but keep other forms of physical contact to a minimum. Moreover, never kiss a local on the cheek, don’t place your arm around someone’s shoulder even if you meant it as a warm gesture, and don’t sit at a table that’s already occupied unless you’re invited to join. If you’re used to standing really close to other people, even occasionally touching them when you’re chatting, avoid doing so when you’re in Norway.
