Although most establishments, like hotels and restaurants, do accept credit and debit cards. You will still need have cash on you during your vacation in Spain. You will need to have cash when you ride in taxis, shop in the flea markets and in some small shopping centers that do not accept credit and debit cards. You also have to keep in mind that a lot of these small shops have minimal change available, so it would be best to have a variety of small and large bills with you. It is also a good idea to have enough euros on you in case an emergency occurs. If you brought your ATM card with you, feel free to withdraw euros while in Spain, especially if your ATM card does not charge transaction fees or only charges the minimum fee. If this is how you’ll get your cash, just keep in mind that different machines (depending on the issuing bank) may charge varying transaction fees and may have different exchange rates.
If you do bring euros with you on your trip, please keep in mind that you can only bring up to €10,000 or its equivalent in another currency. If you bring a larger amount, you will have to submit a declaration when you arrive in Spain. If you do not submit a complete declaration form, or provide falsified information, your money may be confiscated. There is also a minimum fine of €600, and possibly more, depending on the situation. If Immigration believes that you might be involved in a criminal investigation, your money might be taken and you may also face a potential criminal charge. It is just not worth it. So, don’t bring too much money during your trip.
