Never Ignore Where You Step

Are you wondering what you shouldn’t ignore while strolling along the beautiful streets of Madrid? It involves man’s best friend… And their poop! It actually became a bit of a problem in Spain back in 2016. The situation got bad enough that necessitated Madrid’s Mayor, Manuela Carmena, to make a statement that dog owners who did not clean up after their pets will be fined up to €1,500 ($1,700) or they will have the option to perform street cleaning duties for a few days as a substitute. This problem (POOblem anyone?), is not isolated to Madrid. In fact, for a short time in 2013, the town of Brunete (which is close to Madrid) delivered dog poo back to the homes of pet owners who left their pet’s poop behind, the excrement were in boxes marked “Lost Property”. The situation has improved a bit since then. However, even with the stiff fine and penalties in place, the excrement issue is still a problem in the streets, parks and other public places. So, watch where you step!
