If you plan to drive while in Spain, you have to remember to check that your driver’s license is still valid. If you are a US citizen, you must obtain an international driving permit prior to your arrival in Spain. An IDP, International Driver’s Permit, translates your state-issued driver’s license into 10 different languages so you can show it to officials in Spain to assist them in interpreting your driver’s license. The IDP, on its own is not valid. The IDP must be carried with your driver’s license. To drive in Spain, having the required documents is not enough. Of course, you also have to rent a car. To rent a car in Spain, you need to be 21 or over, have a valid driver’s license, a passport and a major credit card.
