If you are wondering if you can go around Spain without being able to speak Spanish; of course, you can! In most tourist spots, which is the entire coastline and all the major cities, it will be easy for you to find people who speak English. As a matter of fact, being able to speak English is a requirement for hotel employees, so feel free to ask the hotel staff for advice and tips regarding the are that you will visiting. In addition, most of the younger generation can speak at least a bit of English, it may not be good though. However, around 60% of Spaniards can’t speak, read or write in English. But, 99% of Spaniards speak Spanish (the other 1%, speak the other languages in Spain, such as Catalan, Basque, Galician, and Aranese), which is why it is still a great idea to learn a bit of Spanish before you go on your vacation.
It would be nice that you learn the basic courtesies: “por favor” (please), “gracias” (thank you), “de nada” (you are welcome), “buenos días” (good morning), “buenas tardes” (good afternoon) and the like. It would also be useful for you to learn some very basic vocabulary: “perdone” (sorry), “no hablo español” (I do not speak Spanish), “por favor, cuanto cuesta” (excuse me, how much does it cost?), “donde está” (where is it?), and learning the numbers in Spanish will get you by in most situations. Don’t feel embarrassed if your Spanish is not great, most people will be helpful.
However, if you are planning to travel to the “off the beaten paths” to places that are not tourist spots; it would be best to get an English to Spanish phrase booklet or download the appropriate app to your mobile (just make sure that you also bring a power bank).
