Spain is a generally safe destination for tourists. As a matter of fact, typically there is a minimal risk from crime in Madrid and Barcelona. Although violent crime may still happen, it is generally uncommon. Foreigners are the targets of choice for pickpockets and thieves who operate in hotel lobbies, restaurants, public transit systems, airports, at car rental counters, and other areas frequented by tourists. However, according to the Travel Advisory of the US State Department, as of October 21, 2019, tourists should “Exercise increased caution in Spain due to terrorism. Exercise increased caution in Barcelona and Catalonia due to civil unrest.” This is primarily because of the possibility of a terrorist attack. The reason for this is that since October 14, 2019, demonstrations have been held across Catalonia following the verdict in the trial of 12 pro-independence Catalan leaders. The largest and most significant of these protests have occurred in Barcelona. Protesters have set fires, vandalized and damaged property and attacked security forces.
Don’t let this discourage you though! The rest of Spain is still a safe place to visit. Just keep in mind to check the travel advisory before your flight so you will be informed of the current events that may affect your trip.
