Never plan your shopping excursion in the afternoon during your trip to Spain. The main reason? Siesta. Siesta is the dead period in the late afternoon when shops and businesses (except for restaurants and bars) shuts down in Spain, the presumption, would be so people can rest and take a nap and stay out of the sun during the hottest hours of the day. Traditionally, there are two periods of siesta in Spain; the one for shops and businesses and then the one for restaurants and bars. When the shops are closed, of course the employees of the restaurants and bars can’t rest since everyone would want to eat and drink. The customary siesta schedule for shops and businesses is around 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.; on the other hand, bars and restaurants close approximately around 4 p.m. until 8 or 9 p.m.  Now that you are armed with this information, you can plan your shopping excursions and gastronomic adventures accordingly!
