Never Eat a Light Lunch

Most people eat a light lunch and eat a lot when dinner arrives. They do the exact opposite of this in Spain. Lunch, also known as the midday meal, is called la comida in Spain. La Comida, usually from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., is the largest and typically heaviest meal of the day. It generally includes multiple courses and wine. Since Spanish lunches are large, and courses come one at a time, you have to remember to pace yourself. Lunch is when the Spaniards chow down paella and drink wine; when dinner time arrives, they typically dine on tapas and salads. The Spaniards believe in eating slowly, enjoying and savoring their meals. Expect lunch to last an hour and a half or longer. Traditionally, lunch breaks in Spain lasts for 2 to 3 hours. Essentially, a lot of establishments in the country closes up shop from about 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., except for restaurants of course!
