It is definitely not poor. It is one of the richest countries in the Americas, next to the US and Canada, and is the richest in the West Indies. The Bahamian dollar is on a 1-is-to-1 with the US dollar. This is ample proof that their economy is strong. They also have the most offshore banking institutions of any territory. Not only is it not poor, it is quite expensive as well. Not a backpackers heaven. So be prepared to spend. Hopefully, your research will help cut down expenses.
