Gladys and Carla Spizzirri knew that the property’s location alone would make it an attractive listing, but they were yet to see what’s inside the house. All Joyce had shown the sisters was a picture of the front exterior, and while the photograph didn’t give them any reason to get alarmed, Joyce’s reluctance to sell her home and knowing the property hadn’t been touched for renovation in such a long time was still unsettling. Would giant rats or cockroaches scurry at their feet when they opened the door? Would they be greeted by an awful stench of stale food or moldy books and mildewed carpets?
Despite Joyce’s initial hesitation and the sisters’ growing apprehension, the Spizzirri knew what they needed to do. They made an appointment with Joyce to drop by the house and do a preliminary inspection. As they made their way to the residence at 148 Jane Street, they felt the anxiety and excitement they often experienced whenever they went to see a home that was about to be placed on the market for the first time. Except they were more anxious this time since they weren’t’ sure what to expect the moment they stepped through the front door.
