Once Ellen had finally announced that she was gay, it would seem that there was no keeping her down. In fact, there was no stopping her at all, truly paving the way for many members of the LGBTQ community in Hollywood. Ellen would date Heche from 1997 to 2000, and most people loved the fact that they were so in love. They were Hollywood’s perfect idea of a happy and balanced lesbian couple. But when the two decided to split, the pain was palpable by all, especially Ellen whom eventually admitted to having a break down after her split from Heche. Eventually she was able to pick up the pieces of her broken heart, meeting the woman who would become her forever, Portia de Rossi, in 2004.
