Don’t Be Surprised About Floods

A very humid climate and a flat terrain that’s barely above sea level on the banks of the Buffalo Bayou is the recipe for Houston being referred to as the nation’s “flood capital.” As such, no matter what season or month it is, don’t be surprised to see the streets of the Greater Houston area getting flooded compared to the rest of the nation. In fact, the streets are actually part of the flood control system as the rainwater is forced into it, before getting flushed to the bayous, and eventually out into Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. With recent Tropical Storm Imelda flooding several neighborhoods in the city in September, don’t be surprised if people develop antlophobia, which is the fear of floods.
