Don’t Think Houston Was Discovered By Houston

Don’t think the city of Houston was founded by former general Sam Houston, the president of the Republic of Texas who led the Texian Army when it won its independence from Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto that was fought on April 21, 1836. The city was actually founded a few months later by investors and brothers Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen on the land near the banks of Buffalo Bayou. They then named it Houston in honor of the president and general, and campaigned to have it assigned as the capital. With just about a dozen people residing at the beginning of 1837, it ballooned to around 1,500 by May. Now, it’s the fourth most populous city in the United States, with an estimated population of over 2.3 million.
