Looking chic and preppy, the professional golfer Melissa Linda Martin got her nickname “Mo” from her father in reference to a famous World War II battleship, the U.S.S. Missouri. Mo was born and raised in Pasadena, California, where her father, Allen Martin, taught her to play when she was only four years old. She played collegiate golf at UCLA, earned the Bruins’ Most Valuable Player Award in 2002, was presented the Pac-10 Academic Honorable Mention three times, and graduated with a degree in psychology. She turned pro in 2005, competed in the Futures Tour in 2006, and played in the U.S. Women’s Open in 2007. Mo was presented the Futures Tour’s Heather Wilbur Spirit Award in 2010 for best exemplifying dedication, perseverance, spirit toward achieving personal goals as a golfer, and sheer love of the game.
