In 1963, Sidney Poitier was a highly esteemed actor who also happened to be the first African American to win an Academy Award for Best Actor in the movie Lilies of the Field. Moreover, Poitier was known to reject stereotypical roles due to his ethnicity, but rather, he chose challenging and serious roles to prove his acting skill and prowess. He was even knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1974, served as the Bahamian ambassador to Japan from 1997 to 2007, and was given the BAFTA Fellowship for outstanding lifetime achievement award in 2016.
