Pretty Woman, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Notting Hill, Runaway Bride—it’s hard to believe how the woman with the most infectious smile in a string of blockbuster hits once frazzled filmmaker extraordinaire Steven Spielberg. Spielberg had cast Julia Roberts as Tinker Bell in the 1991 adaptation of Peter Pan, Hook. By the time the credits rolled, Roberts was nicknamed “Tinkerhell” by cast and crew. During an interview on 60 Minutes, Spielberg described Roberts’ professionalism on set as an unfortunate time for them to work together. However, Spielberg also defended the star, explaining Roberts was going through the most trying times of her life, having to call off her wedding to Kiefer Sutherland then getting hospitalized with a strong case of flu.
Roberts was also reported ill-mannered by famed movie critic Roger Friedman when she deliberately ignored him while cutting in between him and a film director. The critic who previously gave Roberts a rave review for her performance found America’s Sweetheart rude, nasty, and dismissive. Even waitress-turned-actress Julianna Margulies shared how Roberts can be incredibly rude to waitstaff. Roberts had since made amends and did acknowledge she was a “selfish little brat running around making films” when she was younger.
