Communication Is Key

Seen here is a young member of a radio team accompanying the troops of the North Vietnamese Army as they launch an offensive on Quang Tri. Located in central Vietnam, it is the major city of the Quang Tri province, and became a major communication and logistics hub during the conflict and its capture meant a direct line of attack to the important city of Hue. Even with the Quang Tri Combat Base, it was still vulnerable to attack from all sides, and it became the site of some of the fiercest battles during the war, particularly the First and Second Battle of Quang Tri. It sustained some of the heaviest bombings after it was taken by the North Vietnamese, devastating the entire province, and nearly wiping out the 3,500 villages it contained.
