The phrase “I’m Going Home” is painted by the tank crew on the armored vehicle in the aftermath of the Fall of Saigon, also called Liberation of Saigon. The capital of South Vietnam fell on April 30, 1975 as the North Vietnamese troops marched in, signaling the end of the conflict which lasted for 20 years. This led to the formation of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, with the city being renamed Ho Chi Minh not long after. With U.S. forces already being gradually withdrawn the year prior, one of the last operations conducted by the U.S. was “Operation Frequent Wind,” which was the evacuation of the remaining U.S. personnel through helicopter.
