These Boots Are Not Made For Walking

The North Vietnamese troops are known for ordering soldiers who have surrendered to shed their gear, uniforms and combat boots, and it would have been normal to see those boots neatly lined up. But after the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, when the last of the American soldiers were being flown out by helicopters, one of the most bizarre scenes you will see is this: combat boots, probably thousands of them, scattered all over a highway near Saigon. Their owners were most likely ARVN or South Vietnamese soldiers who probably don’t want to be identified or reminded of the defeat.
