The elephant has long been considered by the Lao people as the symbol of power and potential in the forest. They have used it for exploring and carrying equipment, as seen above, over terrain where conventional vehicles cannot pass. The country of Laos has suffered conflict after conflict, with a civil war raging alongside the Vietnam war. Its neutral status didn’t allow the country to avoid being entangled and as a result, the “land of a million elephants” has been bombed more than any other country in history, courtesy of the more than two million tons of explosives dropped by the U.S. for a decade. The bombs dropped in 1969 alone was more than what Japan sustained during WWII.
