The Mountain Men Of The Highlands Of Vietnam

Pinimg

The tribal people of the Central Highlands of Vietnam, who call themselves Dega, fought with the U.S. against the North Vietnamese, with tens of thousands trained by the Special Forces, or Green Berets, themselves. The term Montagnard, which means “people of the mountain,” was given by the French, who also converted many of them to Christianity. The Montagnard had a long history of conflict with the Vietnamese, including land ownership and access to resources, among others, which probably made it easier for the U.S. to enlist their help in the war. With their knowledge of the terrain and skills in tracking, the fierce tribesmen proved to be a valuable ally. Above, three tribesmen are shown being led blindfolded by a soldier.
