Taking A Break From The War With A Christmas Concert

American entertainer Bob Hope was known for his annual Bob Hope Christmas Show, which ran from 1964 to 1972. The show featured other celebrities such as Ann-Margret, Raquel Welch, and as pictured here, singer Connie Stevens, performing for the troops. This show was held at the Long Binh Post, near Saigon, in 1969. Long Binh was quite popular as the haven for REMFs, a term given by front line soldiers to support troops who lived in safety and comfort inside rear bases. Long Binh had everything: swimming pools, football fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, golf driving range and miniature golf courses, retail stores, clubs, and even a go-kart track, among many other amenities. The soldiers stationed here are so comfortable that they may even forget that they’re in a war.
