The War Dogs

Netdna-ssl

Shown posing in the photo with the troops are just some of the thousands of military working dogs used by the American forces during the war. These highly trained canines were mostly German shepherds or Labrador retrievers that were used for basically everything: from base protection to tracking, detecting, and attacking duties. They underwent obedience, aggression, and scouting training basically to take away the enemy’s main weapon which is the element of surprise. With their incredible sense of smell and hearing, they went together with the soldiers on patrol, protecting them from ambushes and booby traps. It is said that about 4,000 dogs were used during the war, with about 350 of them killed in action. The number of lives they saved, however, were thousands.
