To say that helicopters were heavily used in the war is an understatement. Never had the U.S. military relied on helicopters more than on Vietnam where they were used to transport troops and supplies, locate and assault enemy forces, search and rescue operations, and many others. An estimated 12,000 helicopters were used in the duration of the war, with over 5,000 of them reportedly destroyed, with the UH-1 or “Huey” leading the armada. Heavily armed helicopters terrorized the enemy forces, and is always a welcome sight for infantrymen. More American soldiers would have died if not for the medical evacuation made possible by these choppers.
