A Downed Bird On The Rice Fields

The American forces enjoyed a huge advantage in the air during the war, but still suffered considerable losses. Here, a wreckage of the A-7C Corsair II reportedly flown by Lt. Stephen Owen Musselman, which was shot down while providing support for a B-52 bomber on September 1972, is being sorted by militia on a rice field in Hanoi. The lieutenant was able to eject and was declared missing in action but eventually died, with his remains returned by the Vietnamese. It is reported that the U.S. military lost almost 10,000 aircraft during the war, including 3,744 fixed-wing aircraft and 5,607 helicopters. Not all of them were lost during combat missions, though, as more than 500 were lost due to accidents.
