A City In Ruins

The series of coordinated surprise attacks carried out by the North Vietnamese forces against more than a hundred civilian and military outposts in South Vietnam in 1968 was called the Tet Offensive. Traditionally, the holiday served as an informal truce between the North and the South, but under North Vietnamese military commander General Vo Nguyen Giap, it served as the day when the capital shook, as his forces targeted the ARVN Joint General Staff, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Independence Palace, the U.S. Embassy, Radio Saigon, and the Republic of Vietnam Navy Headquarters. The ensuing battle caused massive destruction to the city, as seen above.
