Taking The War To The Enemy

Environment and War

A burning home was a familiar sight during the war as this became part of the tactics the American military employed to “take the war to the enemy.” The U.S forces and the Army of the Republic of Vietnam or ARVN forces faced the difficult task of fighting the enemy as they can disappear into the countryside or general population when they wanted to. One of the measures taken by the U.S. was to burn the villages after uprooting the rural population to a camp and render the area unusable by the enemy. An extreme example of this is the horrific My Lai massacre, where over 500 civilians, including women and children, as well as livestock, were killed and slaughtered by a company of American soldiers.
