The First Pantsuit, Yves Saint Lauren Model (1967)

Amazonaws

Despite the criticisms he received the previous year for the Le Smoking tuxedo, Yves Saint Laurent went on and introduced his first pantsuit in a 1967 collection. Similar to what he did with the tuxedo, the French fashion designer adapted a traditionally masculine suit for the female body, with fitted sleeves, a belted waist, and wide pants. Even though he added accessories like heels and jewelry, his model still wore a necktie. This look received a positive review from Women’s Wear Daily, a trade magazine considered the “bible of fashion.” Women’s Wear Daily called Yves Saint Laurent’s women’s suits in men’s fabrics as the sensation of the Paris season. The passionate couturier created a line of women’s tailored trouser suits that sparked a radical shift and allowed the female clientele to wear garments that were once deemed unacceptable town wear for fashionable women.
