These two schoolgirls were asked to go home and change their clothes because their outfits were not considered appropriate for school. In the 1950s, young women were not allowed to wear shorts, pedal pushers, and tight-fitting slacks to schools in West Berlin. It was more important that the male population of students were not distracted from their studies in any way, and if a female student missed a day of school because she wore clothes that hugged her figure, she had no one else to blame but herself.
Denim trousers were also banned at some schools in East Germany because communist leaders considered the apparel as the stuff of capitalist devils, worn only by criminals and bums. You can get thrown out of class for wearing a pair. Likewise, you can get kicked out of a club or bar with a dress code that does not allow jeans.
