Princess Leia Organa, Carrie Fisher (1983)

THR

Now, this is a photo that has inspired and stirred many, with Carrie Fisher in one of the most recognizable costumes in Hollywood history, up there alongside Darth Vader’s helmet, Dorothy’s sparkly red shoes, and Marilyn Monroe’s white dress. Unlike the blonde bombshell’s soft dress though, Princess Leia’s metal bikini, also called the “Slave Leia” or the “Hutt Slayer” costume, was anything but comfortable. Carrie even quipped that the iron bikini she wore in Return of the Jedi was what supermodels will eventually wear in the seventh circle of hell.
Carrie hated the costumes she had to put on in the Star Wars series, including the white dress from A New Hope, but it was the metal bikini she loathed the most because it was unwieldy, it didn’t cooperate with the rest of her body, and when she lay down, the bikini stayed up and exposed her. Fortunately, the designers made different versions of the costume, including a rubber one Carrie could comfortably wear when she performed her stunts. All the pain, discomfort, and embarrassment was worth it though because Carrie had to beat several big names, including Kim Basinger, Farrah Fawcett, Geena Davis, Jane Seymour, Jessica Lange, Kathleen Turner, Meryl Streep, and Sigourney Weaver, before she secured the iconic role of Princess Leia Organa.
