In today’s age of Facebook, Instagram, and digital photographs, social media can have a negative impact on self-image with a focus mainly on outward appearances. Some are perhaps envious and quick to judge that a pretty face with thousands of followers might not have a high intellect. But beauty and intelligence are not exclusive to one another. Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler, better known as Hedy Lamarr, is a gorgeous Austrian-born American film actress who, with the composer George Antheil, also developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes. Though their invention was not utilized to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers, their technology was eventually adopted by the US Navy in the 1960s and numerous spread-spectrum techniques were incorporated in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology.
The stunning Hedy Lamarr who played Delilah and was chosen as the most promising new actress of 1938 was also honored with the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Pioneer Award in 1997 and posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014 for her brilliant mind and technology.
