We have hundreds of artists on Instagram, trying to post the best content and the most exciting photos with the perfect caption and hashtags in the hopes of being seen and discovered. The contortionist and aerialist, Maud Stevens Wagner, was seen and discovered, and she also became the first known female tattoo artist in America. She met Gus Wagner, a tattoo artist, and when he asked her out, she requested for a lesson in tattooing instead of a romantic date. Maud’s body became her canvas, her work of art, and she became the love of Gus’ life. Several years later, Maud and Gus married and had a child, Lotteva, who also learned the art of tattooing at age nine. With the invention of the tattoo machine, Maud and her husband became the last tattoo artists who drew traditional hand-poked tattoos.
