The Lost Duchess, Anastasia Nikolaevna (1914)

Thelivesofmyancestors

Here is a haunting photo of the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanov of Russia, at age 13, a few years before we lost her and her entire family to a brutal assassination in 1918. Her family was informed to dress up to transfer to a new location where they would be safe, but they were herded into a small room in the basement and executed by shooting. Despite hopeful and persistent rumors of her escape and survival, becoming the subject of many books, plays, musicals, and films along with several women claiming to be the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, Anastasia’s death was confirmed when her remains were discovered in 2007.
Anastasia had been an energetic and vivacious child and was even nicknamed “imp” because of her mischievous personality, climbing trees and refusing to get down to get to class. When she was not busy making life difficult for her teachers, she was also known to be a delight, often charming people with her cleverness and wit.
