In The Naval Airbase, Virginia Davis (1942)

Allthatsinteresting

There are a lot of nice pictures of people in the workplace—a lovely secretary typing at her computer, an imposing business executive contemplating in his office, a charismatic team leader motivating his group. But this picture of Virginia Davis drilling rivet holes on parts of an aircraft in a Naval Air Base in Corpus Christi, Texas shows a woman of competence and power. Hundreds of thousands of women joined the workforce during World War II, readily answering the nation’s need for support. Mrs. Davis was among many who arranged to have someone care for her young children during the day while she worked at the military air station. She’s one of the countless women who rose to the occasion and carried out tasks that were once considered only for men, proving that women were capable of accomplishing things that were deemed out of their reach.
