Women’s Bowling Night (1958)

Fineartamerica

There were no fancy equipment and computerized scoreboards in old school bowling alleys, but the women in this photo were serious about their game. The 1950s was the Decade of the Bowler, with the introduction of pinsetters causing bowling’s popularity to rocket. These women bowling in 1958 would join the Professional Women’s Bowling Association, the first professional bowling association for women that was founded in 1960. The association organizes and manages annual tournaments for the top female ten-pin bowlers in a series called the “Women’s Tour” of bowling. Even though it ceased operations in 2003 due to declining interest in sponsoring bowling for women, the association was relaunched in 2015 by the United States Bowling Congress and the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America.
