Ball Girl, Debbie Fields (1969)

Looking so adorable and happy in the photo is the teenage Debbie Fields, one of the first ball girls hired to retrieve and supply balls for players and officials in major league baseball. At 13, she was paid five dollars an hour, and she used the money to buy the ingredients for homemade cookies which would eventually become the famous specialty cookies we love. Some of her first customers were the umpires of baseball for whom she brought milk and cookies during breaks. Born Debra Jane Sivyer, she married Stanford graduate Randall Keith Fields, the founder of Fields Investment Group, in 1977. The founder of Mrs. Fields Bakeries began her business the following year and has since expanded into hundreds of retail bakeries in the United States and over 80 in 11 other countries. Though she sold her company in the early 1990s, she remains the franchisor’s spokesperson.
