Rolling Over On Their Backs

Since it’s impossible for dogs to scratch their own back using their paws, they roll over on their back for some sweet relief. But scratching their back is not the only reason they do this. When they belly up, they’re saying that they are relaxed and wants some attention from you, like a good old belly rub. There may also be an itch on their belly and they trust that you can help them scratch it. In addition to panting, it can also be to catch a nice cool breeze when they’re hot, since their bellies usually have less fur. They also do this to express their sense of feeling secure in their surroundings, and also as a way to show respect or deference to another dog or person. When playing, it’s a way for them to sort of surrender and avoid getting bitten.
