Why Dogs Lick Wounds

scienceabc

Dogs instinctively lick their wound either to soothe or alleviate the pain. What else can they do, right? It is said that their saliva does have some antiseptic or antibacterial properties, but it is only for certain strains of bacteria, like E. Coli. Why do they lick your wound as well? Dogs may or may not know the chemical composition of their saliva, but it does soothe them. Since they consider you as a member of their “pack,” it would only be natural for them to try and soothe your pain as well, given how good they are in perceiving or reading our emotions. However, it is up to you if you want to let them lick your wound as there are also studies that say it can cause your wound to be infected.
