Sniffing Other Dogs’ Butts

To dogs, sniffing each other’s butt is just like people shaking their hands when being introduced for the first time, only in a more intimate or intense manner given how complex and strong their sense of smell is compared to people. Since smell is more concentrated in the butt or genital area, they sniff it to gather all sorts of information about the other dog, like its sex or if it’s in heat or pregnant, what it eats, how healthy it is, or even its mood. And dogs do this every time. They do this to dogs they are already familiar with, and may do this several times or each time they see each other as they always smell something new. Dogs would normally recognize each other by scent, not by sight, as they trust their noses more than they trust their eyes.
