Lying Down At Your Feet

You will also notice that your dog will develop this habit of lying down at your feet. Dogs do this for several reasons, and includes them marking their territory or claiming the owner, or it can be for the owner’s security. Given the dog’s guarding instincts, it lets the owner know that they are being guarded and serves as a warning to other dogs. Some dogs may exhibit this trait more than others, especially the alpha. On the other hand, it can be for their own security, particularly when the dog is anxious and needs the reassuring touch of the owner. Their pack mentality also dictates for them to be near the owner, again for both party’s security, and for warmth. It’s also their way of communicating to you that they need affection, and being near the owner provides them comfort. Since dogs are really good in reading your emotions, it can be their way of providing comfort in case you’re sad or sick.
