Scratching The Ground After Pooping Or Peeing

If you observe your dog when it relieves itself, you will notice that it will often scratch the ground or kick back the dirt afterwards. It would’ve been nice if they did this to clean up or cover their mess, but that’s not the case. Instead, it’s the canine’s way of marking its territory. When they do this, glands in their paws secrete pheromones, which trigger certain reactions among other canines. The scent of these pheromones are even more pungent to other dogs and last longer compared to the poo or urine. Together with the scent of their feces or urine, it sends out the signal that the territory is claimed, and warns of danger. In case you have a lot of dogs in the household, the one who often does the “potty dance” is most likely the alpha dog, regardless of its size compared to the others.
