Panting

petguide

You will normally see your dog panting on a hot day or after playing or running for quite some time as this is their primary way of cooling down their body. Because of their thick fur, they can’t sweat like people do so they sweat some through their paw pads. But this is not enough that’s why they pant, which is the more effective way as they exchange the hot air from their lungs with the cooler external air. However, there may be other reasons, especially for heavy panting, as it can be a sign of heatstroke or other illnesses. Some dog breeds, like the bulldogs and pugs are more prone to panting or heavier breathing due to their flat face and shortened snouts or muzzles.
